Professionals in the water and wastewater industry generally remain unknown to the public they serve – until there is a problem. That’s when the term “professional” becomes key. Municipal water utilities and homeowners throughout Michigan experienced frozen water lines in record numbers this year, which meant discomfort for both customers and crews; long days for customers without running water, and long hours of overtime for crews attempting to thaw lines in the bitter cold weather.
Anyone will tell you that the winter of 2013-14 was long, snowy and cold, even by Michigan standards. In the city of Menominee, Michigan, for example, problems with freezing lines began in January, and a city-wide let-run order was issued on February 7. The let-run order was not lifted in Menominee until April 29 and at least one water main in the city remained frozen until May. Crews responded to frequent emergency calls, all winter long.

The high level of professionalism and dedication exhibited by IAI’ operations staff in Menominee is to be commended. We thank them for the long hours they put in and their concern for the well-being of the users of the systems we operate.”
